Anime Today — The Top 5 Shows (According to a Philly High School Student)

Editor’s Note: I’ve never given anime a proper chance, nor knew of any beyond Dragon Ball Z. So when one of the City Root Z students showed interest in the genre, we knew it would make for a quality first article.

#5

Mob Psycho 100

This coming-of-age anime shows the protagonists’ goals, wishes, and growth so vividly.

It also teaches the viewer how to be yourself, instead of being something you're not.

#4

DragonBall

This anime is a classic! Somehow, it touches its fans' hearts and souls across generations, probably because it teaches you that you should never give up hope. Each character's development and strength, physically and mentally, is fun to watch.

#3

My Hero Academia

The reason I like this anime is because it focuses on every character's background and development, not just the main character. The full spectrum of character development gives the viewer or reader of the anime thought into much more than one perspective. It also shows that not all villains are born, they’re made. And that you can help people in so many different ways, even if you don’t have a special talent.

#2

Demon Slayer

This anime teaches you that the greatest bonds never break. The protagonist and his sister, Tanjiro and Nezuko, fight through monsters in order to turn Nezuko back into a human. The people who made Demon Slayer are making a movie trilogy that finishes the manga and the anime. I’m excited for it but wish it wasn’t ending.

#1

Attack on Titan

This is my number one favorite anime because it contains some of the most shocking plot twists ever. Also, it shows how one person can change anything and everything all at once. For example, the main character named Eren Yeager changed the course of the story by traveling back in time, then reeking havoc and chaos onto the world. He did it all to keep his friends safe. The main character is basically the hero AND the villain.
