PHILADELPHIA [ MARCH 15 ] — THE BOOM BOX VOL. 5: OUR FIRST FRIDAY @ SILK CITY

After a string of spectacularly sexy rock n’ roll Thursdays in our 2023 A.D. lap around the sun, the legendary Boom Box crew is now setting their sights on the electric neon lights of a Silk City Friday Night in 2024 — the Year of the Mamba; Twenty Dirty Double Dozen; A Year for City Lovin’ full of Art, Music and Community and we’re bringing all of that to you in full flipping fucking force on March 15th, Our First Friday, at the one and only Silk City for The Boom Box Vol. 5.

This one-of-a-kind concierto is a magical collision of music driven by the spirit of rock n’ roll with a new soul. Fueled by good energy, delicious (and discounted) Bacardi cocktails, DJ dance mixes, and the ridiculously talented musical community of the Greater Philadelphia Area — it’s brought to you by The City Root, a local Rolling Stone-esque online publication.

If you know, then oooooh my friend, you already muddafuzzin know that OUR FIRST FRIDAY NIGHT is going to be something of epic proportion. Socks will be rocked, faces will melt, and babies will be made.

The Boom Box crew doesn’t expect to make a dime, nickel or penny on this event, but they couldn’t care less. Because one great rock n’ roll show can change the world.

“MAMMA… THERE GOES THAT BOOM BOX BAND!!”

SO JUST IN CASE YOU WERE LOOKING FOR A GOOD OLE SOCK ROCKIN’

We just wanted to let you know that some of the most talented artists on the scene are going to be tearing things up in case you were thinking on Friday, March 15th…

A CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE MUSICAL SOUL KINDA SHOCKIN'

Leave your frets, worries, burdens, and children at home… AND LETS GET IT HOPPIN.

Leading the charge that Friday is a man and his guitar that are known by one name and one name only…

ZAVETIS

Cartoon Artwork by Joshua Perrin

He also goes by Nate.

And yes, you’ve seen him on your musical journey.

He’s the tattooed extraterrestrial with the wavy, luxurious horse’s mane for hair, and the shining bolt of lightning that most call a guitar.

He’s been on the town’s stages — from League Night @ Johnny Brenda’s; 00s RB Night @ World Cafe Live; Shaking Crab Wednesdays; Festivals and Tours with The Funkitorium; and of course at Silk City.

He combs his hair with a serrated Stratocaster named “Nina,” after his cat. Despite this badassery, he’s a sensitive and eccentric man. A true artist’s artist. Poignant and pure, he digs deep when he strums those heartstrings in order to put forth his damndest effort of musical gold mining. But more important then shredding, he’s bringing people together in this Philadelphia music scene to create, share joy, and build community.

He’s currently on a tear through Philadelphia… runnin’, gunnin’ and rumblin’ with his boombastic band of hair raisin’ pistol-pick-pocketing ramblers.

The Band

Yes, of course you know them…

There’s Simeon “The Synergy” Johnson rompin and stompin’ his drumsticks on The Moon Boom Kit.

Of course there’s Christian “Cold Blooded” Klinefelter playing bass guitar along the watchtower and on The Groove.

Next we’ve got Hero Hiruy “10,000 Hours” Tirfe using his 4 lungs and 16 fingers to tune in on The Tube.

and Will “Fingaz Inc.” Winborne Jr ticklin’ both The Ivories AND The Ovaries.

Behind the scenes, but ALWAYS ON THE SCENE are the Magic Makers…

Surely, you’ve met them in confidence.

First, it’s the designer, connector, and creative Yemme Yaz Mojo AKA The Celtic Dragonfly AKA The Irish Visioness.

And last but not ass, it’s yours truly, Dr. Shago Marlin, Philadelphia’s Leading Sports Psychadelic Psychologist and Thousandaire Playboy.

Dr. Shago & Yazzy Mojo, do a little bit of this and little bit of that over here and over there.

On one continent they’re singing and on another they’re dancing. They are also roommates in West Philly where they communicate with aliens, raise lizards, film UFC documentaries, run a tattoo studio, and grow their own canned water; publicly and popularly known as Liquid Death.

And wouldn’t ya know, they’re also down to rock the microphone.

Together, these happy turkeys — Yaz, Shag, and Zavetis — put on one frickin heck of a live music show in Philadelphia and get downright silly at Silk City.

DON’T MISS OUT!!!!

On Friday, March 15th don’t you dare miss The Boom Box Vol. 5 for the best live, local music show that evening in Philadelphia. Or else.

This is a show that only exists and kicks tits because it’s done by and for a community that’s supremely skilled and committed to growing and evolving. A special thank you is in order to every single person that’s come out to these shows to sing, dance, play, kick it, support, converse, and witness a musical circus befit by the soul of rock n’ roll, but fueled by R&B, Rap, Neo-Soul, Pop, Reggae, and every other musical genre out there.

Most importantly, a massive shout out to every single musician, singer, artist, dancer, painter, poet, and comedian out there who makes Philadelphia and its surrounding areas so exceptionally cool. There’s maybe five cities in the country that can rock with the talent that exists here and most of those are filled with transplants.

We’re here to celebrate music, artistry, and community at The Boom Box and we sure hope you’ll join us on 3/15… if you can even get a ticket.

Signed with love, sincerity, and enthrallment,

Nate Z, Yaz, and Shag

A blurb from Vol. 1

After the rock n’ roll Gold rush

There was a time you could find rock n’ roll influence just about anywhere. From the 60s into the early 90s, the genre and its experimental subcultures ruled the mainstream airwaves, the underground clubs, and the style of the streets. Today, rock still has its place. The alt indie scene in Philly is littered with talent, but the overarching musical landscape is a departure from the days where Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, Metallica, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and so many more were at the forefront of music. Let’s just say the rockstars of yesterday and the rockstars of today (Uzi) are quite different.

Time flies, music and culture evolve, rockers get old, there’s nothing wrong with that. But the soul of a good rock n’ roll show has never left. Even the pop acts best live performances become stadium rock shows. From Taylor Swift to Harry Styles, they step their production up from a studio-enhanced pop tune to a stadium anthem.

But traditional rock n roll that so many of us grew up on, continues to drift further the music scene and with all that being considered, The Boombox was born. It’s goal — to bring a new soul to rock n roll, weaving it’s influence through genres, and give it a home in Philadelphia.

The Venue — Silk City

Intimate enough for it to be personal, large enough for a party, special enough for the first installment of The Boombox…

Silk City is the perfect location for a killer first show.

Shago Marlin

The freedom associated with pseudonym meets a visceral need to tell stories on the human condition through a raw, poetic, and brutally honest lens.

SHAGO (pronounced Shag-Oh) is both a nickname and a catch-all creative umbrella.
