Good got dayumm kinda jams…
is what you get from Scarlet Firoella (FKA Scarlet Cimillo).
We’ll get right to the tunes, but, given the headline, it’s important to note that Scarlet flexes her own voice for the world. She’s no copycat. Nothing borrowed, some things blue, but a voice her own and stories told that are tried and true.
It’s easy to think of Ms. Winehouse when listening to Ms. Fiorella’s work.
I say that, obviously, as a compliment.
Who doesn’t love Amy’s music?
Personally, I like to use her and Anderson .Paak as barometers for people’s musical taste. If they don’t like those two, then I probably won’t process anything else they say on the subject of music.
Anywho, one of those good gotdayumm kinda jams is her latest and greatest, “What I Did,” which she debuted with a cool covid-influenced video production.
The song is radio good for sure.
It’s the kind of song that brings life to a cocktail lounge and sways shoulders at a dinner party.
Her first single, “What U Need,” came out in 2018. That being said, she’s no newbie. On her introductory EP, Angel Face, she stood out on top of a superbly high-quality production of tremendous jazz, R&B, pop beats—an impressive feat for a first-timer, and a fantastic first step.
Scarlet brings an attitude that’s smothered in honey and sultry jazz grooves to the dinner party, lending itself to easily digestible and enjoyable music. By digestible, I mean straight-up tasty. Again, as good as the music is, her voice always comes out on top, making the pure talent easy to catch.
“Lately,” maybe even more so than “What I Did,” is a radio single.
She gets the listener’s collar with leather gloves that are bedazzled with rose petals and jumps right on top of the track. Thanks to a toe-tapping drum beat and a rhythmic acoustic guitar, and what I believe to be a triangle(?), the groovy part of the song is the whole song. The horns break in for the second verse, but, all the while, Scarlet is totally owning the vocals, and transforming a catchy beat into a hit.
Talk about the switch up at 2 min?? Chef’s fuggin’ kiss.
Add Scarlet to both your cocktail party and your cock and tail party playlists… does that play?
Finally, here’s a little love song to Philly and to herself. This talented lady knows how to write a hook, folks.
