Roberta Faceplant May Have a Punny Name But She Makes Some Seriously Soulful Country

“Sunbeams”

The ethereal release on Sunbeams that begins around 2:30 and wraps comfortably 2 minutes later at the end of the song feels like the brightest and warmest sun breaking through a cold and rainy, winter day.

It’s truly lifting, despite the song clearly stemming from a heartbreaking death and perhaps the most prominent line being, “WHERE DO WE GO WHEN WE DIE?”

This is the song that plays at the end of a movie as a good soul makes its journey to the pearly gates. In fact, do that at my funeral when we’re shifting from “sad gathering” at the church to “celebration of life” at the bar. Then play Spirit in the Sky right after.

I wrote this song in honor of my late cousin, Sean Webb, who died in 2021 at the age of 24. The chorus is an adaptation of a poem that I wrote at age 12 to comfort my cousin (his sister) Tess upon the death of our grandfather to cancer. The song is a ballad which explores the ache and longing of grief and loss. Any proceeds from the song will be donated to a Philadelphia-based harm reduction outreach group in his memory.”

I know there’s a lot of music out there and we’ve dwindled are attention spans to that of fishes, so we should all appreciate a song with a payoff.

And I felt all that on my phone speaker while I was digging through pockets looking for twisted earbuds. Imagine if I actually gave the song the respect it deserves and listened on a halfway decent speaker.

“Keep Talkin”

I can hear it in an old timey barn party dance scene in a movie about southern rock n’ roll in the 60s. That’s very specific but I feel it.

It kicks in immediately and makes me want to dance around in Cowboy boots and tip my big western hat. First I’ll have to acquire that clothing but I’ll do it after.

“Keep Talkin’ is a playful, old-timey and upbeat song about a gal who can’t quit a toxic but charming suitor. This song is raw and honky tonk and is emblematic of the kind of music I’ll be making moving forward.”
