Laura Lizcano’s Album “Heart” Blends Sounds and Lends Comfort to Romance

Laura Lizcano is a Colombian-born singer-songwriter based in Philly known for her signature sound blending jazz vocals with inspiration from the pop and Latin folk genres. She released her first full-length studio album, Heart, in October 2020 and recorded an incredible live studio version of “Corazón” half a year later.

With such an exceptional album cover, you know you’re in for something special before you even click play. But of course, it’s more than just a pretty cover, Heart is full of songs that showcase Lizcano’s fantastic voice and eclectic songwriting ability.

While her songs are propelled by dreamy and honest lyrics, the instrumentation does a fantastic and comfortable job supporting them. Wrapping them in a fine package, if you will.

“Home,” for example, is a romantic number where Lizcano’s passionate vocals are complemented by a rumbling string-driven interlude.

Release Show & West Philly Sessions

Editor’s Note: I put the Release Show (below) on in the background as I finished reviewing the posts going up this week and was legitimately annoyed when I realized it had ended and Dave Matthews Tiny Desk began to play thanks to YouTube algorithm. Not even hating on Dave, I was just so in rhythm with Ms. Lizcano and the guitarist that it bothered me when I wasn’t.

The second song, “Home” at 5 minutes in, is my favorite. A tasty, comfortably catchy tune. Aptly named and welcoming, but it’s not a lazy sunday morning type of song. It’s exciting, a dash home for love.
