Eagles vs. Chiefs Super Bowl Preview — Matchups & Prediction

Offense

QB — Chiefs

With his experience and extra week of rest for the ankle, Mahomes gets the edge. The man is a surefire Hall of Famer.

RB — Eagles

Even if Sanders doesn’t get going, Gainwell will, and if he doesn’t, Boston Scott just might, and if he doesn’t it’s worth noting our QB already owns a couple franchise rushing records, and the team as a whole has scored more rushing TDs than any in NFL history.

WR — Eagles

A.J. and Devonta are a top 5 combo, but give credit where it’s due — Juju and Jackson Mahomes are a top 5 TikTok tandem, hands down.

TE — Chiefs

As much as I love Goedert and his improved blocking, Kelce is far and away the best TE in football.

O Line — Eagles

Best in the biz, except for the guy who just got accused of rape and kidnapping who I’m sure won’t be suiting up on Sunday.

The Chiefs O Line is nothing to sneeze at, with three of the five going to the pro bowl. The same number as the Eagles. And of course, the Chiefs O-Line is, after all, constructed by Andy Reid who’s always made the line a focus. He and the Chiefs front office gave it the necessary overhaul it needed early in Mahomes career.

Very happy to see that Stoutland is resigned and will be the one developing Cam Jurgens once Kelce retires.

Coaching / Play Calling — Chiefs

Steichen has been great this year, but he’s had lulls. Even in the blowout last week, the passing game looked weak… not that we needed to use it. Whereas Big Red’s consistency from his second year with the Birds, and especially with Kansas City, has been unmatched.

Overall Offense — Chiefs (by a nose)

Despite the Eagles matchup advantages, to say that they’ve got the edge against Mahomes, Kelce, a stacked O-Line, and Andy Reid is a stretch. So much of this comes down to establishing the run on offense and shutting it down on defense.

Defense

D LIne — Eagles

Record-setting savages with depth that scares those glow-in-the-dark fish at the bottom of the ocean. Chris Jones is scary but I have faith in our interior linemen to stymy him.

The Chiefs are 2nd in sacks, but we still average nearly a sack more per game, which is a wide margin in a long season. Chris Jones is a certified problem and rightful DPOY candidate (the same way Hasson Reddick is) and Frank Clark is a stud, but their O-Line is definitely more scared of our D-Line than our O-Line is of their D-Line.

LB — Chiefs

Love Edwards and White, but if there’s anywhere on defense the Chiefs have the edge, it’s here. TJ Edwards is the number one graded PFF Linebacker, but the Chiefs three are talented across the board and play well together. Much better than the way Greenlaw and Warner did last week with the 49ers.

CB — Eagles

Probably the best duo in the NFL. Chiefs are talented at every position, but AJ Brown eats on Super Bowl Sunday, for sure.

Safety — Eagles

Epps has been solid all year and CGJ is an All-Star snub. Tyrann Mathieu and Sorensen were better than the Chiefs current duo.

Coaching / Play Calling — Chiefs

By a nose… Gannon gets too much hate. Besides a few games where they had trouble stopping the run, the defense has been very consistent and he does a great job with an impressive D-Line.

Overall Defense — Eagles

They fly around, hit hard, and limit big plays. Besides that CMC run, it’s tough to think of any long, tackle-breaking runs. The secondary limits the deep ball and the D-Line speeds up every offense, pulling the quarterback into the deep end, rendering them uncomfortable and limiting their progression.

Prediction

Eagles 29 Chiefs 24

Bold prediction: Eagles get a defensive TD

With Mahomes trying to play superhero football in his own territory, a second D-Linemen gets to him, strips the ball, and it’s a quick scoop and score.
