“Somebody Told Me” Stella Ruze Makes Modern, Indie Folk Anthems
You can probably ditch the “indie” label. Stella Ruze brings the melodies and lyricism of early, catchy Americana into the modern age with an extended band, and an energy uptick, creating anthem-like songs that allow for a generational singalong that any crowd can appreciate, which appears rather clear at their most recent show on Friday night at World Cafe Live.
“Somebody Told Me” is a certified jam and may be their most popular tune. A great example of the anthem/singalong songs they put out.
The full band brings some serious sound, incorporating lively trumpets and sax to liven the catchy choruses and hummable riffs and melodies.
With lead vocals split between Brendan Johnson and Katie O’Donnell, Stella gives a rounded, wholesome approach to indie folk, and offers music for the whole fam. The kids are as likely to grasp it as the grandparents.
“Travel Song” is a great beach tune and probably my favorite off their 2020 album The Greater Dog.
