The People Are Ready for New Music from CJ Mills

When you listen to one of CJ’s songs, you’ll want to listen to her whole album. Problem is, we’re still waiting on that album. She’ll rip a live version of an unreleased song on instagram (or real life live) then leave the people hanging. Not cool. Which is why I was glad to hear from CJ herself last week at City Winery after a commanding performance with a solid backing group that she’s got a half album stashed and ready for release. Hopefully that comes out soon… the people are asking for it!

If she takes too long we might need to find creative ways to get her to release it.

IDEA: every day she doesn’t a new strange rumor about her will spread: “Did you know she kicks puppies?” … it could work.

Her Single, “TRY”

The most recent single from this multi-instrumentalist producer / singer-songwriter is “Try,” an ode to damaged love. While it has the potential to serve as an anthem for the scorned and ignored, the angelic chorus of background vocals ease the heartache and gives both the song and the listener some levity.

Wings to fly. On & up, though the dust in the wind.

It also encourages communication in those situations, where we don’t quite know where we stand with our partner and the future isn’t looking bright. At least that’s what I took from it on a personal level.

This is a follow-up to her other very impressive singles, “Focused” and “Hard Words” — “Focused” is a certified jam and was incredible catching it live.

Her flexing ability is downright impressive. Not every artist can hop on a live feed and put together a radio-friendly performance for shits and giggles, like she did on "What You Do," a song she wrote that very same week.

The song opens with a Ye-esque beat (that she produced) which drops out in exchange for a sultry vibe but returns for a triumphant finish. The head bop right off the top drew me in. It's more contagious than a yawn. Check your pulse if you're not bouncing along to this catchy modern R&B/soul jam with an inviting groove. We can’t wait to see what CJ has planned for the future.
